Watch a talk with Giulio Cappellini on sustainability in design education

As part of the London Design Festival, Dezeen is partnering with Istituto Marangoni to host a conference with the school’s artistic director, Giulio Cappellini, on sustainability and its place in design education. Watch live from 6.30pm UK time.

Chaired by Dezeen’s Associate Editor for Design and the Environment, Jennifer Hahn, the conference will explore the importance of teaching sustainability in design courses and how it can be taught effectively.

The conference coincides with the first Design Graduate Fair at the School of Fashion and Design Istituto Marangoni Londonwhich will showcase the work of the first graduates of the school’s new design programs.

Giulio Cappellini is the creative director of the iconic Italian furniture brand Cappellini, founded by his father in 1946.

He is known for looking beyond Italy for emerging talent to design for the brand and, in doing so, leading a wave of modernization in the once insular Italian design industry.

Cappellini helped launch the careers of designers like Tom Dixon, Jasper Morrison, Marcel Wanders, the Bouroullec brothers and Barber & Osgerby, among others.

He acts as artistic director for a number of brands and institutions, including Istituto Marangoni, as well as the Italian bathroom brand Flaminia ceramicelevator manufacturer Abortion liftand lamp specialist Luce icon.

Cappellini teaches as a visiting professor in several design and architecture schools around the world and has organized exhibitions and events all over the world.

The event is the first in a series of conferences held at the Istituto Marangoni during London Design Festival.

Over the weekend, the school will host conversations with jewelry designer Lara Bohinc on emotional design, architect Michael Pawlyn on biomimicry and regenerative design, designer Sarah Angold on meaningful design and advice on furniture sourcing and manufacturing matter of things on materiality.
