Meet Crain’s 2022 Notable Women in Construction, Design and Architecture

New York’s built environment – a montage of styles assembled over centuries – is more than just soaring buildings. From One Vanderbilt to Hudson Yards, the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Unisphere to Yankee Stadium, the city’s structures have long represented resilience, optimism and ingenuity.

For generations, this skyline – and this streetscape – have overwhelmingly represented the vision and work of men. But this is no longer the case. More and more women are making significant inroads into the fields of construction, design and architecture.

The number of women working in construction trades increased by 17% between 2017 and 2018, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. Meanwhile, half of architecture program graduates today are women, as are nearly two-thirds of commercial interior designers. These figures only tell part of the story, however, as women remain underrepresented in the highest levels of management.

With all of this in mind, Crain’s presents this list of 40 remarkable women in construction, architecture and design who represent the top tier of their respective industries. They bring creative vision and artistic prowess essential to their craft.
