How I got my job as….Co-founder of Dubai beauty studio The Lash Show – Emirates Woman

Welcome to the Emirates woman weekly “How I Got My Job As…” series where we chat with amazing entrepreneurs and businesswomen based in the UAE and around the world to find out about their career paths that got them where they are are now ; what their daily routines look like; the advice they would give to those just starting out; and the obstacles they had to overcome.

This week, we’re talking to Bushra Shakhsheer, co-founder of Dubai-based beauty studio The Lash Show.

Born in Saudi Arabia to Jordanian parents, Bushra moved to Dubai while studying at university. Having always been interested in starting her own business in the beauty industry, the budding entrepreneur decided to team up with her longtime friend, Sara Mohamed. Noticing a void in the space, the couple wanted to create a beauty studio focused solely on eyelashes. Doing just that, The Lash Show was born in 2019.

Emirates woman sat down with Bushra to learn more about her role as a beauty entrepreneur and what’s next for The Lash Show.

What was your favorite subject in school?

Architecture studio lessons for the two of us. Where usually we had to explore a new design concept, a creative flow of new ideas. Every class will be an exploration of ideas and it’s never boring. Additionally, it’s been long hours a week (18 almost/week) that has also played a role in our friendship, spending many hours a week together, supporting and helping each other to realize unique ideas.

What was your first job?

We both worked as project managers in the architecture and construction industry in different companies.

What inspired you to get into the beauty industry?

I love taking care of myself, eyelash extensions were my go-to as it saves me so much time getting ready and waking up looking ready and pretty no matter how many hours I slept!

What finally brought you to Dubai?

For university, Dubai was close to Saudi Arabia, where my family lived. Sara is from the United Arab Emirates.

How did the idea for The Lash Show come about?

I started brainstorming ideas for a business that I originally planned to start on my own in the beauty industry. After a few weeks of work, the business concept germinated in my head and I decided that I wanted a store that was completely dedicated to the people experience, focused on eyelashes. I was also able to design it and organize this experience for others. Since Sara and I are good friends, she was always aware of the ideas in my head, and that’s when Sara got excited and said she wanted to be part of it! As a team, everything became reality. We woke up the next day and started working on what is now known as The Lash Show.

What are the key elements of your role?

As entrepreneurs, Sara and I work together on almost everything, our role is split between marketing, sales, hiring, social agency management, public relations and more.

Tell us about your daily routine.

I am a morning person, I start my day with a cup of coffee which is “me time”, most days are hectic, there is no clear routine but most days I go to the office from my architecture/interior design studio, to the afternoon meetings, and then visit The Lash Show.

What advice do you have for those looking to follow in the same footsteps?

Be a true leader, stay consistent, be patient and invest in yourself and invest in the right team to help you achieve your goals and realize your dream, don’t rely on doing everything yourself.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

You should never stop learning and growing.

And what’s the worst?

I don’t remember, if it was bad I probably just ignored it instantly.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome?

I think the biggest challenge so far has been the four-month lockdown in 2020 due to COVID-19, which was only six months after we opened. We are so proud to be here today because we strategized and worked even smarter.

What are your goals for 2022?

We are working on expanding and scaling our brand for a second branch, and hope the next step is franchising in the Middle East.
