HOMES Brewery opens new campus, coffee roast on the west side of Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR – Award-winning HOUSES Brewery extended its imprint on the west side.
After years of construction, its new campus at Jackson Plaza has 27,000 square feet spread over three buildings.
Owner and founder Tommy Kennedy said his initial vision for HOMES was to build a community out of a craft beer space, and that’s exactly what he did.
HOMES opened its brewery in the spring of 2017 and was so well received that it became known for its long lines before special launches and selling beer within hours. Since its launch, the brewery run by Chief Brewer Nick Panchame has won national and international awards.
Shortly after opening in 2017, Kennedy closed on the Jackson Plaza campus after quickly surpassing its 1,500 square foot brewing space at the brewpub.
He said all of HOMES ‘beers are still brewed at the brewery, but are stored and fermented in a large warehouse on the new campus.
His latest invention, a seltzer smoothie called Smooj, is his first drink to hit the market. Currently, it is sold in 11 states covering both coasts and is expected to be in 25 states by next year, Kennedy said. Another building on its Jackson Plaza campus will soon be fully dedicated to the production of Smooj as the demand for the drink increases.
The campus also includes Kennedy’s last company Bulldozer coffee. The cafe and roast is front and center at the resort entrance and offers on-site roast coffee, scratch-off donuts, homemade burritos, milk bread sandwiches, and plenty of seating.
Kennedy said Dozer is designed to be a place where you can enjoy breakfast and lunch items with a good cup of coffee.
“The intention behind adding everything else was that we knew we had that extra capacity for brewing, but we didn’t want it to be a sad warehouse either,” Kennedy said. “We wanted it to be active and dynamic, and the next logical step was coffee. There is also an overlap in terms of consumers. (We wanted) something that would activate the space during the day and be very complementary.
He said the new facility also acts as a creative hub for HOMES staff and has a large commercial kitchen. Panchame and chief roaster Adam Rizzo are skilled chefs and approach both trades from a culinary perspective, constantly experimenting with flavors, Kennedy said. He added that the group plans to host pop-ups in their space, allowing up-and-coming chefs to test and share their concepts with the local community.
Just past Dozer’s space is a bar where HOMES serves their Smooj, beers, take-out canned drinks and merchandise. A large bright flexible space is located towards the rear of the building. The Clean Room features rotating art installations, the first of which is now on display.
The installation is a collaboration between artist Mike Han and Synecdoche Design Studio, a local company that also designed the entire campus. Han also installed permanent murals in the bathrooms and the dining hall hallway of the building.
Entitled “Together We Are Whole,” the installation features over 100 pieces of 8×10 inch black plywood cut from a single digital painting. Individual pieces are on sale for $ 125.
Kennedy said he hopes the café-meets-gallery will become more than just a remote workspace for customers.
“We’re trying to create an interior space around building community around coffee instead of isolationists on their laptops,” Kennedy said. “It’s a more active and dynamic space where people are welcome to be on their computers, but it’s also a place where you can have a conversation. “
Outside is a large courtyard with fireplaces. With its large garage doors that can quickly transform the flexible gallery room into an indoor-outdoor space, Kennedy envisions it as a venue for community events.
“Family movie nights in the beer garden or art exhibitions, whatever you want,” he said. “It was as if we were creating fertile ground for fun and creative activities.”
