What started out as a basic business with no inventory has evolved into a bustling business that now occupies a storefront at the Clay Terrace Mall in Carmel.

Suffice it to say, Hoosier Sister – the home decor store that siblings Carmel Gretchen Harter and Heidi Heldt launched eight years ago in a tiny space at Midland Antiques in Indianapolis – has come a long way. .

“We started to pitch the idea of starting a fun little antique business,” Harter said. “We didn’t have any products to sell, so we took things out of our own homes and set up a booth. We were amazed and completely stunned when people showed interest in our booth. It all started to grow from there.

“What started out as a fun little adventure has turned into something we never imagined.”

Today, Hoosier Sister occupies a storefront in Clay Terrace. Harter and Heldt moved the business to a permanent location after traveling across the United States for several years selling in antique salons and opening pop-up stores, most notably in Clay Terrace in 2019.

Eventually, the task became difficult for the sisters, who are each mothers of three boys. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic hampered travel in 2020, leading to the decision to open a permanent store in Clay Terrace, where the sisters previously had a temporary lease.

Hoosier Sister sells vintage home decor items from across the country and offers an interior decorating service. He also has his own line of homemade candles.

“We are definitely a unique and constantly evolving home decor store,” said Harter. “The challenge we face is to keep the story fresh and exciting. We want people to come back every week and see constantly changing layouts and products. We really work to make every shopping trip a memorable one.
