Text description provided by the architects. The hotel is located in Dongfengyun Art Town, Mile, Yunnan Province. The architecture, designed by renowned artist Luo Xu on the basis of the design concept “austerity, simplicity and authenticity”, reveals a round, stable and simple image. The building seems to bear the traces of time and seems to be kneaded by a pair of big rough hands. He is resting quietly on the red floor, showing a magnificent posture. Approaching interior design, CCD has not adopted expressions of “modernized” or “industrial” design. Instead, the team drew inspiration from the local cultural context and used simplistic languages ​​to integrate space into nature.

Hunting in natural light. The bowl-shaped entry space has a carved opening on top, which creates echoes. With natural daylight entering, dynamic light and shadows move freely in the space and fall on the curved perimeter wall, which appears as a rippling water surface and evokes an endless imagination. The varied rhythms of light and shadow coupled with surprising sensory experiences and elaborate details create a sense of ritual to welcome guests.

Lighting design. Considering the attribute of the project as a resort hotel, the design team mainly used low intensity lighting, in order to produce a comfortable, natural and warm light atmosphere. In contrast, the lighting of works of art, signs and table tops is accentuated to create visual reflections. Based on the “less is more” principle, direct ceiling lighting is reduced to avoid glare.

The bowl-shaped entrance space and modern lighting fixtures incorporate more local cultural elements to showcase the hotel’s unique features. Lighting and daylight collide with natural materials such as red bricks, dirt and straw textured paint, accentuating each other’s presence. Wall-mounted lighting strips installed close to the floor generate a soft, graceful and ethereal ambience, interacting perfectly with the space. The frameless black mirror fixtures are mounted concealed, creating a visual feast where light and shadows, materials and space are well blended.

Artistic atmosphere. The lobby continues the natural design languages, and shows full respect for architectural structures and local culture. Simple materials such as local burnt red bricks, cement, clay and pots are adopted, in order to unify the tone of the interior space and integrate it into the building as a whole. Complex abandoned by CCD, exaggerated decorations, and intended to let each object of the space gradually reveal the authentic charm over time.

The cement-finished back wall, round columns, pot-shaped lamps, and geometric reception desks exhibit powerful, three-dimensional, and stable, sculpture-like features. These elements are independent and also complement each other. A natural and simple atmosphere permeates the overall space. Through various forms, the design achieves the symbiosis of natural elements and architectural space.

Tranquil aquatic landscape. The atrium isn’t decorated with excessive flowers or plants, but is highlighted by a shallow, undulating pool in the middle that is both tranquil and intriguing. The architecture and the plants are reflected on the surface of the water, which expands the atmospheric space and provides a natural, comfortable and refreshing experience. Upon entering the atrium courtyard, guests can immediately relax and experience indescribable pleasure.

Spiritual Retreat. Yunnan is a popular country tourist destination to heal the mind, because time seems to stand still here. The walls of the restaurant use local red clay bricks and are inspired by the grape trellis shape, which not only combines modern innovations and ancient textures, but also creates endless possibilities in diverse ways. CCD ditched cookie-cutter, intricate expressions and added vibrancy and fashion to the space. Meanwhile, the characteristic local pottery is used as ornaments to reinforce the sense of history in the space.

The names and designs of all the rooms pay homage to local artists such as painting, pottery, dyeing and composition, as well as treasures like jade and pearls. Every detail keeps track of local craftsmanship and secretly tells its own story. With a “warm atmosphere” and “original simplicity” blending into the space, the design fully embodies the aesthetic philosophy of the hotel – “Art dialogue with everything, inspiration paints life “.
