Call for ideas: 2021 Women’s Pavilion Architecture Competition

The value of a civilization is measured by the place it gives to women. Women today have distinguished themselves in various fields of life as speakers, doctors, diplomats, etc. It is undeniable that women around the world have made tremendous strides in this ever-changing economy.

While many have faced the world with confidence, there are still many women trapped in domestic violence and gender inequality. Violence against women does not need to refer only to physical violence. It is much broader and includes sexual, emotional, psychological and financial abuse.

The barrier between violence and empowerment is often a lack of education. Education has the potential to help women seek employment opportunities and make them financially independent. It is this independence that enables women not only to seek growth themselves, but also acts as a catalyst to empower others around them.

It is imperative that we make an environment sustainable for women; one who empowers them and opens up multiple avenues for them to flourish.

“There is no more effective development tool than empowering women. – Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations

Empowerment can be seen as a means of creating a social ecosystem in which one can make decisions and make choices individually or collectively to promote social transformation.

Despite efforts to get women into organizations like these, there still seem to be a considerable number of women who, due to the remoteness of these centers and other factors such as cultural beliefs, the economic situation and the social structure.

The community pavilion would serve as a means of raising awareness of the issues facing women in today’s society. This platform would be used to empower women by building on their abilities and strengths and encouraging their belief in their own ability to effect positive change.

It’s time to build a space for change!

Participants are to design a women’s community pavilion optimized for 75 users engaging multifunctional spaces for women of all age groups using architecture as a means of change.

The challenge here is focused on creating an architectural wonder that symbolizes the impact of women and their influence on our society. Designed spaces must integrate function, aesthetics and structural ingenuity.

Participants should consider optimal use of space when designing. The structure should not exceed 500 m² of footprint. The proposed design should also be easy to maintain by its users.

The designed space should include, but not be limited to, functions such as reception and administration area, cafeteria, spaces for sanitation, skills development workshop workshops, space exhibition, cultural spaces, library, stores, counseling booth, intervention room, community space, etc. Participants are encouraged to develop their own program in addition to this. The design should trigger innovative activities that stimulate and accelerate community development.

This structure should symbolize hope and strength, the design should inspire the local community and be able to raise awareness of women’s rights and empowerment. The competition aims to promote architectural design as an instrument of social change.
