Architect chosen to design Saban Center and Tuscaloosa Event Center

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – The City of Tuscaloosa is moving forward with the next phase of a major city-owned development downtown.

Tuscaloosa city councilors voted to hire Davis Architects to design the Saban Center and an adjacent event center. Councilman Matthew Wilson, who represents District 1 where the two buildings will be built, called it an exciting time to see more development in this part of Tuscaloosa.

The Saban Center and Tuscaloosa Event Center will be on the current site of the former Tuscaloosa News Building. The city purchased this property in hopes of turning it into an attraction to attract more visitors to downtown. City leaders have approved a contract with Davis Architects that provides for the design phase not to exceed $7.5 million. Wilson explained how the Saban Center, Tuscaloosa Event Center and River District Park fit into Tuscaloosa’s future.

“It gives you walking. There are recreations so families can be together, so that person can be at the park. Classes can come to the Saban Center. There’s the event center that’s going to be next door. We look forward to being able to invite all of Tuscaloosa back to the western group,” Wilson said.

There is no specific date when construction could begin. Wilson hopes construction will be complete by 2026.
